The main objectives of Informatics Education are the understanding of the computer, the electronic equipment for everyone in the present information era, and cultivating the required competencies for one’s future life, like problem solving competence and improving one’s creativity. And the most proper tool for these objectives is Software Education. The purpose of this study is to prepare a stepping stone for the proper Software Education by investigating the situation of Informatics Education before it is introduced to our school in the near future. To achieve this purpose, the research is focused on two questions: First, how is Informatics Education being conducted in the secondary school? Second, how do secondary school teachers perceive about Software Education? For this research, an online survey asked secondary school Informatics Education teachers who joined in the Gyeongnam Association of Computer Education, ‘Love of Computer Science’ of Naver Cafe, and ‘Meeting of Teachers Who Prepare for Software Education’ of Naver Cafe and the result was analyzed. The survey on Informatics Education Situation says that in case of Software Education, it has not been properly educated yet in comparison with its importance. Though Software Education is provided, it is not necessarily taught during the regular class. It has been already dealt with in club activities and after school classes. And the teachers were generally positive about their own competence for Software Education. Next, when Informatics Education teachers were asked what they think of Software Education, most of them answered that they would willingly teach the subject when it gets included into the curriculum. However, it seemed that they were mostly lack of various teaching material and helpful equipment for Software Education. In addition, most of Informatics Education teachers answered negatively, when they were asked if the other members of their schools have the same idea on the necessity of Software Education. When asked what is the most essential for the appropriate Software Education, many teachers responded that profound promotion activities to change the social awareness of Software Education. Next, the support for high quality training for teachers to improve their professionalism is keenly required. Lastly, ensuring the class hours for the proper Software Education is also needed. This research shows how to activate Software Education of Korea: First, the survey shows that not any one of the 11 sections of Informatics subject is not properly taught in comparison with its importance. This results from the lack of class hours to teach important contents of Informatics. Therefore, it is essential to ensure enough class hours to teach the subject when the government prepares to bring this subject into the school curriculum. Second, even though many tools for teaching Software have been developed, most of them have not been available for Software Education. The better promotion for these teaching tools and more teacher training courses for making full use of the tools and improving their expertise are required. Third, despite last year’s announcement by the government to strengthen Software Education in accordance with global wave, many members of a school, such as principal, other teachers, students, parents and others, did not fully feel the necessity of the subject. To change this general social awareness, further promotion for Software Education should be performed actively and steadily.
