The purpose of this study is to examine the history, significance and legacy of the Christian education practiced by early missionaries to Korea, with particular focus on the regions of Busan and Gyeongnam. In order to accomplish this purpose I will examine how Christian education began and how it was continued from a social historical viewpoint based on research into early missionaries' Christian education, which was formed and spread against the background of our nation's recent history. In order to civilize Korean people, Christian missionaries used education based on Korea's history, culture, customs and traditions. At the same time, they implanted a semi-feudalistic idea, society, which is thinking from the Enlightenment, and by teaching Christian truth and the spirit of independence, Anti-Japanese thought by teaching Christian truth (doctrine) and spirit. Through this, the Korean people experienced movements of nationalism and Independence with a sense of sovereignty based on confidence in their own Korean traditions. Thus Korean society was able to escape traditional ethics and began to renew its value systems. As a result, individual citizens were able to achieve self-fulfillment and regain independence as a real sovereign nation state with citizens educated into the necessary mind set. In particular, Korean society introduced democratic education, equal educational opportunities and the diversity of the curriculum. Based on the influence of these early missionaries to Korea on their Christian education, I will establish the Christian identity in all the fields and apply it to the state of Korean education. 'The Improvement and Changes of the education system' by early Protestant missionaries, which lay at the center of 'modern education' had met the challenges of the times. As a result, we were able to accumulate the potential for the growth of recent times. Our government back then was not able to solve educational problems. The modern education practiced by the early missionaries, which was a response to the dynamic changes of the times, improved the educational system and educational content in practical ways beyond the limits of the old traditional educational system. It expanded the goals of education to include the general public, developed society, and strengthened the national capacity through pragmatism and democratic education. It also expanded the sciences and the study of egalitarianism, the dissemination of Hangul, the cultivation of rationalism and critical thinking, the uplifting of a sense of national identity, the establishment of modern education and the diversity of the curriculum. As a result, the values of freedom and democracy, equality and fraternity, were experienced across society all over Korea. To the general public it brought individual self-realization and a national consciousness and understanding of Korea as a sovereign nation state. In fact, these factors were a decisive contribution to the recovery of Korea's sovereignty and independence. It was especially through education that the democratic ideology spread, along with the cultivation of a sense of sovereignty and the diversification of the curriculum. Through this retrospective study of the content and legacy of Christian education practiced by early missionaries to Korea, I will seek a way forward for Korea's current and future education
