The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of a rhetoric approach as a new method in philosophy and the education of writing. Importance on philosophy and writing education is increasing to nurture a whole and creative talent required in modern society. Writing education is especially necessary to cultivate a basic ability for learning, rational communication ability and problem solving ability depending on critical thinking. Therefore, this study is firstly to look at the current situation in philosophy and writing education, secondly to survey some characteristics of new rhetoric and the history of rhetoric in the field of education, and thirdly to investigate the possibility of a rhetoric approach in philosophy and writing education. Democratic citizens who have a reasonable and communicative ability for solving problems and universal truths, are required in the rapidly changing modern society. It is possible that we produce democratic citizens like this through systematic educational programs. We need logical, critical, and creative educational programs for the purpose of training a democratic citizen with great ability. Writing education is the efficient field which teaches how to think. Also it is the education of how to learn a basic ability, which is a foundation for all learning as well as a liberal education. To teach how to think critically and how to write argumentatively enables students to study any major fields. The purpose of an argumentative ability which is obtained through writing education is to persuade not only oneself but also the readers. Modern society needs absolutely an ability to organize argumentation through a situation and context based on a rational and persuasive ground. These argumentative abilities play an important role in solving social conflicts and problems. In the respect of assuming rationality and persuasive power, the power of argumentation is obliged to have a rhetorical nature. The major aim in rhetoric is to persuade someone. Persuasion is defined as an action to lead to a change in hearer's attitude and a rational ground, that is, a convincing reason for an assertion should be presented to succeed in persuading someone. It is an action to justify the assertion to present a ground or a reason for an assertion. It is during argumentation that persuasive action is achieved. Therefore, Rhetoric can be easily connected to writing education to serve as a medium of a goal of education that achieves improvements in argumentation ability. One of the characteristics in modern democratic society is cultural puralism in which various values crash. In cultural puralism a rhetoric attitude which seeks a best solution through reasonable persuasion and simultaneously consideration of a person with an opposite viewpoint and a social situation/context is needed. From this point of view rhetoric can be contributed to desirable human beings and a goal of education with my curriculum is needed. Finally the means of communication in modern society is changing dramatically. The past forms of communication were limited because digital systems occupies important means thanks to the development of science technology. We are not satisfied with the past communicative ways both qualitatively and quantitatively in modern society in which mass information exchange and immediate communication in real time are required. It is necessary that we teach how to think of coping actively with a modern society and how to speak. We expect some possibilities with a new approach and rhetoric education in company with an existing rhetoric education and its internal stability based on critical thinking through the rapid change of the means of communication.
