A 1135bp cDNA clone, pRC1, encoding a chitinase was isolated from rice. The cDNA contained an open reading frame for 340 amino acid and showed 80-94% homology to other rice chitinase. A conserved cysteine-rich domain consisting of 41 amino acids showed 70-90% homology to that found in tobacco, bean and other rice varieties. A genomic clone was also isolated and partial sequencing (900 nucleotides) has been carried out. The cDNA and chitinase multigene family.
