We have isolated an antifungal protein from the seeds of Phytolacca americana, designated Pa-AFP. The Pa-AFP was purified to homogeneity by ammonium sulfate precipitation and chromatography on Sephadex G-50 DEAE-Sepharose. The apparent molecular weight of Pa-AFP was estimated to be 4.5kDa by SDS-PAGE. The Pa-AFP inhibited the hyphal elongation of Rizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea, and Pyricularia orizae.
