This study was undertaken to investigate the iron status and related factors in female college students in Gyeongnam. 1. The mean age of subjects was 20.9±1.2years, iron deficiency(ID) among the subjects was estimated as 59.2%. 2. The rate of Home stay, the level of Pocket money and the perception of health were lower in ID group than in normal group(p<.05). 3. The height, weight, LBM, PBF, BMI and WHR in the groups had no significant differences and BMR was lower in ID group (1403.8±75.3kcal) than normal group(1418.0±65.2kcal)(p<.05). 4. The levels of Hb, Hct and SF were significantly lower(p<.001) in ID group (12.9 ± 0.9g/dl, 35.7 ± 2.2%, 10.9 ± 9.6ng/ml) than normal group(13.9 ± 0.6g/dl, 38.2 ± 1.6%, 25.3 ± 8.3ng/ml). Also the levels of TS, MCV and MCH were lower in ID group than normal group, but the TIBC was higher in ID group than normal group(p<.01). 5. The intake levels of all nutrients except energy, vitamin A, Ca and Fe were above the RDA. The mean Ca and Fe intakes from food were 71.5%, 79.7% of the RDA,respectively. In general, the frequency of Kimchi was highest, followed by vegetables, whereas the frequency of fish was lowest. The frequencies of fruits, milk & milk products were higher in normal group than in ID group(p<.05). 6. The 12 subjective symptoms were measured and the high prevalence symptoms were Cold hand & feet, Tired out easily in the groups especially. The responses to Tired out easily, Get a cold easily were higher in ID group than in normal group(p<.05). 7. The intakes of dietary protein and Nonheme-Fe were major predictors of iron status in the subjects. In the both groups, the serum ferritin concentration was significantly correlated with anthropometric indices, and transferrin saturation(TS) was significantly correlated with clinical symptoms. In the ID group, The frequency of poultry was negatively correlated with TIBC(p<.001), and In the normal group, The frequency of meat was positively correlated with serum Fe concentration(p<.001). In conclusion, ID was prevalent among subjects, the dietary contents of Fe and MFP(meat, fish and poultry) facilitating Nonheme-Fe absorption were low. Therefore, proper nutrition education is required to maintain desirable food habits and to improve their iron status for female college students.
