This study aims to look into the educational significance of movies and to recommend means to use the movies as materials in actual classrooms. With the purpose to arouse more interest and to enhance the communication skills of the students, not only the language ability but also the intellectual and emotional level of the students were considered in selecting the movies. At the same time, to make efficient language study possible through various class activities, research and experiment were visualized. To select the movie, a survey was conducted among the 10th graders, and eventually ‘You’ve Got Mail’ was selected. The movie was divided into 20 clips and each clip was given a title and summary. Teaching plan was created by analyzing and comparing the consideration points such as, Schema Building Questions, Underlying Meaning & Other Speaking Points, Grammar Points, Writing Topics and Cultural Differences. Based on the analysis, 5 clips were selected and adopted for actual classroom use. The class consisted of Pre-viewing activity, While-viewing activity, and Post-viewing activity. The movie was viewed not through the conventional movie tape but through high-definition and quality-sound DVD. Also instead of using the whole movie, parts of the movie that were considered essential were captured or even reconstituted by editing the captured clips with the purpose of arousing interest and concentration from the students. This study consists of 4 chapters. The first chapter talks about the necessity and the purpose of this study. The second chapter explains the educational value and significance of movies and the theoretical background on the criteria of selecting movies that could be utilized in classrooms. The third chapter depicts the result of the survey that was conducted to select the appropriate movie that will be sued in the classrooms, the teaching plan and the results of a survey that asks the effects of the movies that were adopted in classrooms. Following are the results of the study. First, the purpose of rousing interest and concentration from the students was successful because the intellectual and emotional levels of the students were reflected in the process of selecting the movie. Second, communication zeal and motivation of the students were stimulated while watching the movie. Consequently, during repetition, students were able to stay focused and student-oriented class activity was made possible. Third, by adopting various classroom activities, integrated study became an option. Therefore, it is necessary for the teachers to utilize the movies to arouse interest in English class. Also various movie-related materials should be developed to enhance the English communication skills of the students. Finally, teachers must show a keen interest in the use of movies in classroom, make efforts to develop movie-related materials, construct a system to share these materials, establish multimedia resources, and make efforts to enhance the skills of using these materials and systems.
