Studies were carried out to investigate the effect of low temperature and GA₃ treatment on the growth and flowering of Limonium spp. in an effort to develop an effective low temperature treatment method for a year round commercial production in the southern regions of Korea. Low temperature treatment advanced bolting and flowering with little difference among cultivars. With low temperature treatment for four weeks at 3℃ to ‘Ocean Blue’ and Fantasia’, cut flower yield increased and days to flowering decreased by about 15 and 10 days, respectively. By low temperature treatment during early growth stage, flowering was hastened by 6 to 16 days and cut flower yield increased in ‘Ocean Blue’. However, the effect of low temperature treatment in ‘Fantasia’ was insignificant. Low temperature treatment to plants, which were rooted and still contained in the culture vessels, hastened bolting and flowering in ‘Ocean Blue’. This method is expected to be practically applied to commercial production systems as a low cost treatment system of low temperature to Limonium. The longer a low temperature treatment period to these plants in the culture vessels, the earlier bolting and flowering, shortening by 15 and 19 days, respectively. However, weight and length of cut flowers, and no. of nodes were not affected. By chilling and pinching flower stalks on the day of transplanting (22 May), cut flower yield of ‘Ocean Blue’ was 2 times as much as that of the 2 July. When ‘Fantasia’ plants were transplanted between 22 May and 2 July after combined treatments of chilling and pinching, higher quality and the greatest yield of cut flowers per plant were produced. When Limonium spp. ‘Chanel’ was transplanted to greenhouse after December 11, no. of accumulated hours at temperatures below 5℃ was 277 hours, plant growth was more vigorous, and both bolting and flowering were hastened. GA₃ treatment also advanced bolting and flowering with little difference among seasons and cultivars. Application of 400mg·L^(-1) GA₃ advanced flowering by about 12 days in ‘Ocean Blue’. Unfortunately, flower quality in summer culture was lower than that in the control though. Application of 400mg·L^(-1) GA₃ gave a significant 6 days shortening of days to flowering and the greatest cut flower yield in early May, when the price of this flower is good. GA₃ treatment at 10 days after planting resulted in the greatest acceleration of flowering, but flower quality deteriorated as compared to that of the control. As a result, the proper concentration and time of application to advance flowering in Limonium without sacrificing flower quality seemed to be 400mg·L^(-1) GA₃ foliar sprayed at 20 days after transplanting. Combined treatment of low temperature and GA₃ advanced bolting and flowering with little difference among cultivars in summer culture. With low temperature treatment to ‘Ocean Blue’ for four weeks, bolting and flowering were hastened by about 20 and 14 days, respectively, and flower yield increased. Flowering of ‘Fantasia’ was not accelerated, while flower yield increased as compared to that of the control which had no treatment at all. 400mg·L^(-1) GA₃ treatment advanced flowering by 17 days in ‘Ocean Blue’ and about 15 days in ‘Fantasia’. However, flower yield and flower quality deteriorated in both cultivars. In winter culture, combined treatment of low temperature and GA₃ shortened days to flowering by 19 days and produced more and best quality flowers.
